The most important national and international duties:
- Is responsible for readiness in operations and communications on a 24-hour basis
- Monitors emergency traffic and makes sure that maritime rescue sub-centres also receive it
- Maintains a situation picture over national and international SAR resources
- Determines the division of national resources
- Operates as a SPOC point of Finland
- Alerts foreign SAR authorities
- Alerts national resources abroad
- Is responsible for SAR contacts to authorities of other states
- Follows the international development of the search and rescue branch
- Develops and standardizes operations models, training and equipment

The most important regional duties:
- Is responsible for SAR measures taken because of emergency traffic or other distress situations
- Determines the phase of emergency
- Is responsible for alerting maritime rescue units and providing them with tasks
- Designates coordinators of SAR operation
- Decides on termination of search and rescue actions
