Advice to boaters

  •  keep your boat and equipment in good condition.
  • check the weather forecast before you go boating at sea.
  • tell your relatives or friends of the planned route, and particularly inform them if it is changed.
  • in case of an emergency, contact the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre or a maritime rescue sub-centre. Describe calmly what has happened, what kind of help is required, the total number of persons on board, and the exact position, if possible. On the new charts the names of some islands have been changed. Tell us your name and contact information. A description of the boat is also desirable. If the situation gets worse, contact the Maritime Rescue Centre immediately.
  • it is advisable to carry a spare battery to the mobile phone in case of awkward situations.
  • inform the Maritime Rescue Centre also of other risky situations in the sea area
  • remember there is a danger of hypothermia in the sea area of Finland all year round.
  • maritime search and rescue is free of charge in Finland. However, towing a boat from one pier to another is not considered search and rescue.
